INDICATIONS:
Echinacea is famous as an immune builder for immune deficiency and can stop an acute oncoming cold, flu, or infection if used in large doses at the first sign of immune breakdown. Eighteen studies outlined in the ABC Clinical Guide to Herbs show positive effects for indications for cold, flu, upper respiratory tract infections, candidiasis and gestational safety.
As a long-term tonic, Echinacea serves as an immune booster for individuals dealing with immune deficiency, including chronic colds, flu, bacterial infections, slow healing, HIV, and bed sores. It aids in rebuilding a robust immune response. For those prone to illness during cold and flu seasons, starting a moderate dose of Echinacea 1-2 months before the season can prevent illness. When one family member is sick, giving Echinacea to others can prevent the spread of the virus.
Echinacea stimulates the ingestion of foreign particles by white blood cells (phagocytosis) and boosts the production of white blood cells. It aids in preventing and reversing tissue degradation (necrosis) from wounds by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation through inhibiting hyaluronidase production. While Echinacea doesn't directly kill microbes, it enhances the immune system's ability to do so, reinstating a healthy innate immune response.
Furthermore, Echinacea stimulates the action of natural killer (NK) cells and induces the production of cytokines. Its various compounds, including polysaccharides, phenols, flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives (such as cichoric acid, echinacoside, and chlorogenic acid), and alkylamides, have immuno-stimulating properties in different ways. A full spectrum extract of Echinacea may offer the most effective benefits for immune support.
